Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about logging food, tracking workouts, reading progress, managing plans, and controlling your data.
Getting Started
How do I log food?
Open the Nutrition tab and select Log Food. You can search the food database, scan a barcode, use AI Food Snap, reuse a recent food, or create a custom food. Review the serving size and nutrition before adding it to your journal.
Can I edit something after I log it?
Yes. Tap a food or workout in its daily log to update it. You can also delete an entry without affecting anything else logged that day.
Nutrition
How does AI Food Snap work?
Take a photo of your meal or choose one from your photo library. GainMacro estimates the foods, portions, calories, and macros visible in the image. Results are estimates, so review the ingredients and serving sizes before saving.
Why can barcode nutrition differ from the package?
Barcode information may come from manufacturers or community food databases and can change over time. Always compare the result with the package label. You can edit or report information that looks incorrect.
How do meal suggestions work?
Meal suggestions use your remaining calories and macros, fitness goal, diet style, and food preferences to recommend meals that fit the rest of your day. You can adjust servings and customize a recipe before logging it.
What is Healthy Nearby?
Healthy Nearby helps you discover macro-friendly restaurant options around you. You can compare calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat before adding an item to your food journal. Location access is only requested when the feature needs it.
Can I create my own foods?
Yes. You can create private foods for your personal journal or submit community foods to the shared catalog. Custom foods can include serving sizes, macros, extended nutrition information, a barcode, and additional serving options.
Training
How do I track a workout?
Open the Workout tab and select Start Workout. Strength sessions track exercises, sets, repetitions, weight, and RPE. Cardio sessions track the activity, duration, distance, intensity, and estimated calories burned.
What does RPE mean?
RPE means “Rate of Perceived Exertion.” It describes how difficult a set felt. An RPE of 10 represents maximum effort, while an RPE of 7 usually means you could have completed about three more repetitions.
Can I create a workout split?
Yes. GainMacro includes Push/Pull/Legs, Upper/Lower, Full Body, Bro Split, and Cardio Focus templates. You can also create and edit your own seven-day workout split.
Progress
How is weight progress calculated?
GainMacro uses a smoothed seven-day trend so normal daily fluctuations do not immediately change your status. More consistent weigh-ins create more useful weekly trends and goal projections.
What counts as an on-target nutrition day?
Calorie adherence compares a completely logged day with your calorie target. Protein adherence counts a complete day when you reach or exceed your protein goal. Incomplete days remain unscored instead of being treated as successful or unsuccessful.
What is a Physique Check-in?
Physique Check-ins let Apex members save progress photos and receive AI-generated feedback about visible progress, training focus, nutrition, and recovery. This feedback is informational and is not a medical assessment.
Can I export my data?
Yes. You can export your food and workout history as a CSV file from the Progress tab. You can also export your core account data as a JSON file from Privacy & Data settings.
Plans and AI
Who is Max?
Max is GainMacro’s AI fitness coach. Max uses the goals and activity you share with GainMacro to provide more relevant nutrition, workout, and progress guidance. AI responses can be incorrect and do not replace advice from a qualified professional.
What is included with each plan?
Spark — Free includes core nutrition tracking, workout logging, progress analytics, barcode scanning, custom foods, reminders, and 13 AI Food Snaps per month.
Grind — $4.99/month includes everything in Spark, plus 50 Food Snaps, 70 Max messages, 30 AI meal suggestions, and Healthy Nearby.
Apex — $9.99/month includes everything in Grind, plus 100 Food Snaps, 140 Max messages, 75 AI meal suggestions, and 30 AI Physique Check-ins per month.
Do the AI limits reset?
Yes. Food Snap, Max, meal-suggestion, and Physique Check-in limits reset monthly. You can view your current usage and upcoming reset date in the Subscription section of the app.
Can I turn off AI features?
Yes. You can grant or withdraw AI consent at any time from Settings → Privacy & Data → AI Data Consent. Withdrawing consent disables Food Snap, Max, meal suggestions, Physique Check-ins, and other AI-powered features until you enable consent again.
